Thank you for your interest in serving on the Board of Directors and/or for the Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce.  Please review the expectations of the Board of Directors and complete the following questionnaire. Applications are now being accepted for the 2025 Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. Applications must be submitted to the Chamber by November 15, 2024 at 11:59 pm.

Board of Directors Commitment

The Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce is governed by a dedicated Board of Directors, responsible for steering the organization, shaping its policies, and managing its resources. Our Board members are elected from a diverse group of business and professional leaders, reflecting the dynamic landscape of our community. They ensure the Chamber stays aligned with its mission by setting strategic goals and approving the annual business plan.

Every Director plays a critical role in the Chamber's success and must fully understand the commitment and responsibilities that come with this leadership position.

Qualifications for Board Membership

To be considered for a seat on the Board of Directors, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a member in good standing of the Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce.
  • Exhibit strong leadership qualities.
  • Have a history of community involvement.
  • Be the owner or chief executive of a member business in good standing.
  • Show commitment to the Chamber’s mission.
  • Be willing to accept the responsibilities and dedication required of Board membership.

Roles and Responsibilities of the Board

Governance:
The governance of the Chamber is entrusted to the Board of Directors, who are elected to represent a broad cross-section of the business and professional community. The Board is responsible for establishing policies, providing guidance, and setting the strategic direction of the Chamber through the adoption of both an annual business plan and long-term goals. The Chamber’s bylaws empower the Board by outlining its authority, including oversight of the organization's finances and overall wellbeing.

Advocacy:
As advocates for the Chamber, Board members actively promote and protect the organization’s mission. They serve as ambassadors to the membership and the wider community, ensuring that the Chamber’s values are upheld and that its positions on important community issues are clearly communicated. Directors shall promote a positive image of the Chamber to members, prospective members, public officials, and the community at large. Directors shall actively seek to expand the Chamber’s membership.

Consultation:
Board members bring a wealth of expertise, making them invaluable to the Chamber’s success. Their insights and quick-response advice on key areas of interest or specialized fields are vital in shaping the Chamber's initiatives and strategies.

Support:
Board members lead by example, whether through attending Chamber events, sponsoring activities, or supporting promotional efforts. Their visible engagement encourages broader member participation and sets a standard for others to follow, demonstrating their commitment to the Chamber’s growth and vitality.

Avoid Conflict of Interest: In the event, a Board Member’s personal or individual business interests conflict with the interests of the Chamber, the Director shall remove himself or herself from consideration of issues(s) on which the Director’s judgment may be compromised. When involved with Chamber matters, Directors shall avoid any appearance of impropriety.
